Is there something that makes you stand out? What talent do you have that makes you an exceptional applicant to a College? That is what your backpack is designed to show.
Admissions offices process thousands of applications in a short time period. Weight is given to the required elements but as schools continue to “design” each class with a focus on building a blend of diversity, the SCOIR Backpack will showcase substantial and well-developed interests & talent. We built our platform to help guide this by allowing students to submit only up to 4 stories to a particular school.
When deciding what to include in the Backpack stories, consider your compelling characteristics and talents that could not be fully explained in the core application. It’s important to reinforce that schools are looking for students possessing leadership, dynamic thinking, empathy, initiative, communication skills, and collaborative characteristics.
Backpacks are private, but can be shared to allow others to view and comment on them. When shared, anyone who can view your student profile will have access to view your backpack, including your school counselor and parent (if parents are invited to view your SCOIR).
The SCOIR backpack allows you to create unique stories using imagery, multimedia, PDF files, and written content. As you work on items, share with teachers, advisors, family, and friends to get comments and feedback.
Navigate to the Backpack tab. Click on My Items | Create Item
Add a Title and Description (required) to your item. For example: Landscapes photography portfolio and a description of the portfolio such as type of shots, and what makes them interesting. Add a category label for this item to show in search results. Click on the '+' sign to add a cover to you backpack. This is in the form of an image only.
Upload your cover photo (only images may be uploaded here. .jpeg, .png, or .giff).
Once image is uploaded, click Save + Continue or Save for Later.
You will be prompted to add content as you move to step 2. Click on the + sign to add a story element:
Only four story elements can be added to one backpack. Clicking the + sign will open an option to add text, upload images, or add an embedded video.
To embed a video, the shared link is needed. NOTE: YouTube, Vimeo and SoundCloud are the only supported media types at this time. After the share link is obtained, paste this in the link field. Enter a caption for your video. Save your changes.
Once again, click Save and Continue or Save for Later.
The last step in the Backpack creation is to share the your Backpack. Sharing allows collaboration and the ability to get different opinions of your material. Students do not have to share, clicking finish will allow the item to be saved and it can be shared at a later date. Items can be edited, deleted, cloned or shared at any time.
However, clicking Share will open up a share box where a Student may add anyone in SCOIR to share their backpack with. Start typing the name of the person in the box, and SCOIR will pre-fill anyone who matches this.
Select the person from the drop down box and type in a message. Next click 'Send' and this will be forwarded via an email link. NOTE: Items cannot be shared with anyone outside of SCOIR using this share method. Please see: Share a Backpack Item with a College or Anyone Outside SCOIR.
